Those Elves who declined to follow the Valar on the Great Journey became known as the Avari. These had come to love the starlight of Middle-earth and chose to stay behind, unwilling to leave their native land. Despite the harassment by the Black Enemy, they spread through eastern as well as much of western Middle-earth.
