Their quotes in LotR? are actually written in Old English.

I am teaching Beowulf in class tomorrow and I will bring that up.

I knew that somewhere along the way but forgot it.

This is L152. Note Tolkien's comment: "But in a period when dialect merely marked place and not rank or function, and at any rate details of grammar and vowels had no social implications, it would be best to avoid any modern rusticity."
